Many lobbies, while remaining mostly functional, provide some information about what goes on inside the building. But by intentionally making the lobby an opportunity to learn about what goes on inside, we turn the ordinary lobby into a Learning Lobby, a chance for every visitor to learn something about the educational, research and outreach activities of the building's occupants.
Interactive computer kiosks, large, colurful posters, hands-on interactive demonstrations or displays, tables with samples or brochures, display cases or large colorful models are among the features one might find in a learning lobby. One notable Learning Lobby, at the National Primate Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, actually has a habitat containing a thriving colony of live marmosets (small South American monkeys)!
It doesn't have to cost a lot of money to turn an ordinary lobby into a learning lobby. Computer kiosks can often be created using surplus but still serviceable computers. Display items are often already in your departmental collection, but are usually stored or filed away.
