Sara
Will become director of university relations at UW-Rock County. Sara's last day is July 8. Tricia will be taking over the lead for the open houses, and right now the Health Sciences/Athletics open house (October, 2003) is next.
Charlie Hoslet and Sara are discussing how the CIVC will be organized and will work.
The CIVC (Campus Information and Visitors Center) will stay at the Red Gym but it may move in the organizational chart.
Set up a meeting with Charlie to express our support for continuing and expanding the work of the CIVC, including the tour function and the organizational function. Sara says that Charlie values the CIVC.
One proposal is to put CIVC under the Union. The CIVC has approached the Union about managing the Red Gym as a venue. Another possibility is the Dean of Students, another is University Communications, and the fourth is staying with the Chancellor's office. The union is the only one that's come forward with a formal proposal. What should be the emphasis and the balance between external and internal. Timeline—decision probably will be made in the fall.
Group
Need CIVC for support for Outreach Functions....
Tricia
Key question is how can CIVC work with OCR on working with business community. Science Alliance messages: invaluable in welcoming people to campus, in organizing tours on campus with outreach groups, in maintaining records of numbers of visitors, in organizing and funding Science Expeditions, Charlie's focus is on OCR (Office of Corporate Relations) and our approach should be "how can we help you?"
Bill Barker
Possibility of corporate sponsorships. Charlie will be building relationships with CEOs.
Tricia
Casey is now in charge of State Relations, and the question is, Who is going to be writing the grant proposal to UW Foundation to support Science Expeditions? CIVC organizes tours for all visitors and also for prospective students and their families. CIVC started as the CAC by the Dean of Students back in the 70's.
Ellen
There's some clout and cachet in getting a request from the Chancellor's office—an argument for keeping it under the Chancellor's office.
Ken
It's also a powerful way to redirect university resources to key areas and to under-served areas—such as welcoming people to campus to explore.
Budget
Some money is alloted on July 1. It is alloted in several parts.

Ken
See http://www.biotech.wisc.edu/outreach/alliance/index.html for nascent Alliance internal site to review.
What we need are websites for these functions
  1. Science portal (also serves as Science Expedition promotional site)
  2. Science Alliance internal
  3. Science Expeditions planning
Need to get a list of people who want to get on Science Alliance
Renee and Ken met to discuss lists of people Ellen imagines a way to know who's involved and who is yet to be involved in the group.
Calendar
Tricia
Nick Weaver reads all the calendar entries and categorizes them...so events should be submitted through the university Calendar.
Ellen
Emphasize need for field for closed, register or open to the public.
Barker
Pleasant Rowland Foundation kept talking about boys and girls clubs. 250 kids after school, meals, van drivers, what they don't have is curriculum, now there is no science program at all. Provide the opppurtunity to work with this venue. Question is this appropriate for the science alliance. I would love it if the science alliance as an entity would sign on.
The Office of Research and Outreach Services in the College of Letters and Science is currently working to implement a science education partnership between UW-Madison and the Boys and Girls Club. They provide the infrastructure and the venue. They used to have a volunteer in science, but that volunteer is leaving. The proposal is to have the University provide the science expertise and partner with BGC to build a science component into BGC's afterschool program that serves 250 kids every day. They'll provide the room and the logistics and the care, and UW provides the science expertise. The venue is the BGC building near the Walgreen's on south Park. The science club has about 20 people. The programming would be flexible in length and duration. One goal is to set up a science lab at the BGC building.
Also partnering with the Friends of Wingra and BGC to give kids experience in learning about watersheds and aquatic science in renovating Wingra Creek (Watson Creek).
Tricia
Talk to LaMarr Billups to get some background on UW outreach to southern Madison
Tom
Talk to Aquene Freechild and to the humanities outreach woman (see WSJ June 30 story)
Tom
I will draft and circulate a letter indicating the willingness of the Science Alliance to partner in this grant proposal.
Powell
Shakashiri, now program of Chem Undergraduates to go around and do demonstrations.
Tom
give us a place to train people, we would always have a venue.
